unit weight of steel - Introduction:
Steel is a variety of iron, containing 0.1 to 1.5% carbon. Steel plays a vital role in civil engineering.
A rebar is a short form of reinforcing bar, it is a steel bar or Steel wire provided as a tension bar, used in reinforced concrete structures like Footing, columns, beams & slabs of house construction & it is also used in a reinforced masonry structure. It is used to increase the strength of the concrete structures.
Steel unit weight is used in two different types of units based on their function, The classification is given below
1. Unit Weight of Steel Bars – In kg/m³
It is the ratio of the weight of steel per unit volume.
SI unit is kg/m³.
Unit weight of steel is 7850 kg/m³.
Mostly used for theoretical purposes
2. Unit Weight of Steel Bars – In kg/m
It is the ratio of the weight of steel per unit length.
SI unit is kg/m.
Unit weight of steel is - kg/m. (based on diameter values varies)
(Mostly used for site purpose to calculate the total number of steel required for purchasing)
Calculation of unit weight of steel per m
Weight of steel rod = Volume of steel rod × Density of steel rod
Weight of steel rod = (Cross-sectional Area of rod × Length) × Density of steel
Unit weight of steel rod = ( Ï€d²/4 × 1) × 7850
= ( Ï€d²/4 × 1000) × 7850/1000000
= d²/162 kg/m
{ 1m length= 1000 mm length
7850 kg/m³ = 7850/ (100 *100*100) = 7850/1000000 kg/mm³}
Unit weight of steel rod = d²/162 kg/m (shortcut)
where,
d= diameter of steel rod in mm
For foot
Unit weight of steel rod = d²/533 kg/foot (shortcut)
where,
d= diameter of rod in mm
Based on the above shortcut
1. calculation of Unit Weight of 8 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 8 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (8×8)/162
= 0.395 kg/m
2. calculation of Unit Weight of 10 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 10 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (10×10)/162
= 0.617 kg/m
3. calculation of Unit Weight of 12 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 12 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (12×12)/162
= 0.890 kg/m
4. calculation of Unit Weight of 16 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 16 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (16×16)/162
= 1.58 kg/m
5. calculation of Unit Weight of 20 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 20 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (20×20)/162
= 2.47 kg/m
6. calculation of Unit Weight of 25 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 25 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (25×25)/162
= 3.85 kg/m
7. calculation of Unit Weight of 32 mm steel bar
Diameter of Steel = 32 mm & Length of Steel bar = 1 m
= D²/162
= (32×32)/162
= 6.32 kg/m
