how to calculate tiles needed for a floor |how to calculate tile square footage
Introduction:
For the tile estimate calculation, the total number of tiles needed to cover an area of the room should be installed with a gap, grout line between the two tiles make it a better appearance, the gap between two tiles is the range between 1/8 inch to half an inch.
Grout is in the form of concrete material which is most widely used for repair works
What are the sizes of flooring tiles?
The size of tiles ranges from smaller to larger it’s come in the shape of square & rectangular but square tile is most popular & is being widely used. The size of tile are described below in inches
- 8×8
- 10×10
- 12×12
- 16×16
We should use larger tiles having less grout line to make the smaller room look larger.

The classification of tiles includes stone tiles, ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, glass tiles &Quarry tiles. Still, porcelain & ceramic tiles are so costly & glass tiles may be broken under pressure so it can be better to use stone tiles like marble & Granite for the flooring site of any room.
procedure for flooring tiles calculation:
STEP 1: Take the measurement of one side of the room( length)
STEP 2: Take the measurement of another side of the room (breadth)
STEP 3: Calculate the area of each room and add the total area of the room
STEP 4: Calculate the area of 1 tile which are being used
STEP 5: To get the number of tiles required for any room divide the total area of room by area of one tile
NOTE suppose wastage of tiles is 5% add it in total numbers of tiles hence total numbers of tiles calculate in flooring site.
How to calculate the number of tiles required for flooring?:
● Given dimension:-
Calculation of tiles at flooring site
How to calculate the number of tiles at the flooring and wall site
Tile calculation
Example
- For A1 room = 18’×16′ =288 sqft
- For A2 room = 16’×12′ = 192 sqft
- For A3 room = 16′ ×12′ = 192 sqft
- For A4 room = 18′ × 16′ = 288 sqft
Size of one tile= 24”×24” = 4 sqft
24″ = 2 feet
● Calculation:-
Total area of all room = 288 +192 +192 +288
Total area = 960 sqft
The total area of 1 tile = 4 sqft
Number of tiles require = total area of room/ area of one tile
Number of tile = 960 /4 = 240
Lat us consider 5% wastage of tile
Wastage tile = 240×5/100 =12
Hence total tiles require for flooring sites of the house having for 4 room
Number of tiles =240+12 =252 Ans.
