honeycomb of concrete -intro
Honeycombs Appear in concrete which are hollow spaces and cavities left in the mass of concrete on the surface or inside the mass where concrete could not reach. This appearance looks like honey bees nests.
The finished concrete surface shows the air void in concrete or the majority of aggregate with less or no mortar between them indicates the Honeycombing of Concrete. Honeycomb in concrete is caused by the mortar not properly filling the spaces between the coarse aggregate particles.
process of Repair of honeycomb concrete
1. First step, remove the loosened aggregates and concrete particles (refer to Picture) from the affected surface by using a wire brush and a chipping hammer.
2. Clean the surface thoroughly with a brush to remove finer particles in concrete and then wash the surface of the concrete with water.
3. wait for some time to allow the surface dry and apply Chemi-fix glue on the area.
4. Now mix the concrete grout with white cement and add the required amount of water .
5. Then pour/paste the mixture in the affected area to fill it completely. In the case of a large honeycomb, the concrete mixture should be poured after creating a pocket.
6. Remove the formwork after 12 hours and then cure it well.

Reason for honeycomb of concrete.?
- Improper vibration in concrete
- workability of concrete (inadequate)
- Use of stiff concrete mix or concrete mix prepared earlier.
- Over reinforcement in structural members.
- congestion which arrest-free flow of concrete.
- Use of larger size aggregates in structures.
- Formwork is not stiff.
- Concrete is poured from more than the allowable height which is usually 1.5m as per IS 456:2000.

Prevention of Honeycomb of concrete
- For honeycombs in concrete proper guidance from an engineer in charge
- Wait for 2 – 3 hours for drying out the surface and apply Chemi-fix glue on the area.
- Remove formwork if any applied and cure surface properly for at least 24 hours
- Honeycomb affected concrete should be broken partly and treat it with adhesive chemicals and then should be recast in that place.
- Honeycombs which result in reducing the strength of concrete as well as it will allow water to percolate which leads to corrosion. Corrosion is a process which continues through reinforcement rods even in good concrete, this result in losing grip between rods and concrete which is very dangerous to the safety and life of concrete structures.
- At places of junction of columns and beams, concrete with strictly 20 mm or less aggregates should be used with slightly more W/C to avoid honeycombs.
- Taping the sides of shuttering from outside with wooden hammer during concreting and vibrating will help minimizing honeycombs to a great extent.
- In case of columns and beams use of thinner needle say 25 mm or less with vibrator at intricate places of concreting will also help in reducing honeycombs.
