Definition of Area Moment Of Inertia:

Area Moment Of Inertia also known as the Second Moment of Area, is a geometrical property of an area which measures how its points are distributed about an arbitrary axis. Its unit of dimension is length of fourth power, L^4, and should not be confused with the Mass Moment of Inertia. Where, for a thin piece of material, the Mass Moment of Inertia is equivalanet to the Area Density times the Area Moment of Inertia.

Convert between Area Moment of Inertia units:

The general equation for the Moment of Inertia for bending around an axis can be expressed as
Iaxis = ∫ y2 dA                          (1)
where
Iaxis = Area Moment of Inertia related to an axis (m4mm4, in4, ft4)
y = the perpendicular distance from axis to the element dA (m, mm, in, ft)
dA = an elemental area (m2, mm2in2, ft2)
