M sand vs river sand | difference between m sand and river sand
What is M-Sand?
M- Sand Full form is Manufacturer Sand.
M Sand is artificial sand made from the crushing of rock or granite for construction purposes. M sand differs from natural river sand in its physical and mineralogical properties.
To derive the required sizes for construction purposes, these hard rock deposits are crushed, and this material is segregated in different fractions to suit different construction sites.
M-Sand
silt content of around 0.2 percent and for river sand 0.45 percent
water absorption of 1.6 percent, and for river sand 1.15 percent
M- Sand Manufacturing Process
- Crushing:
- Screening:
- Washing:
Crushing:
Quarry & Rocks stones are crushed at jaw crushers, cone crushers, & vertical shaft impact crushers, respectively leading to the formation of angular and cubical fine aggregate particles
Screening:
Screening ensures this material is properly graded as similar to river sand
Washing:
Washing removes all the micro-fine particles. after washing it is used for civil works
M- Sand Advantages and Disadvantages
M- sand Advantages
- M-Sand is highly cohesive & has high compressive strength.
- It has lesser impurities, which help in producing better quality concrete.
- the controlled gradation of Zone-II is possible, suitable for concrete.
In research, it was found that concrete produced by using manufactured sand obtained 6-9 %(percent) higher compressive strength and 12-15 %(percent) higher flexural strength compared to river sand of the same grade.
A nearly 30 %(percent) increase in masonry strength is obtained with the use of manufactured sand.
It requires a lower water-cement ratio if the mortar is mixed with manufactured sand, which results in higher strength
M- sand Disadvantages
Improper crushing of manufacturing sand results in angular & flaky particles that are not suitable for Construction work
What is River Sand?
- It is naturally available material (locally available) and extracted from the river beds or riverbank.
- The shape of Crushed sand is angular & cubical and has a rough texture and hence, better for concrete.
- This Sand is used as fine aggregate in mortar concreter, & Natural river sand is this most preferred choice as a fine aggregate material.
P Sand Meaning
P sand full form Plastering sand. The difference between Msand and P sand is in the size of the particles. Plastering sand will have fine-grained particles, whereas manufactured sand will have little coarser particles may be.
