'Open-well' type staircases were popularly used in olden constructions. But nowadays they are rarely used, because for two reasons -
- space constraints
- escalators
They are required in Public / Commercial buildings even days date, to take care of larger floor heights and large masses of people. They are found in a residential type of construction very rarely (at least in India).
The Open-well staircases may be in the form of
- Square well or
- Circular well (spiral)
