Depth of Foundation
In ideal Conditions, the Footing should rest on rocky or sand, But in practice, the soil is present in the mixture of sand, clay, stone, and silt. in that, we have to use particle size distribution to find which type of soil is present in major proportion, The soil which has major component of sand and rock ultimately have more sbc & in that depth we have to rest the footing
Factors affecting foundation
- Bearing Capacity of Soil
- The density/ unit weight of the soil
- Water table depth
- building weight
- load types
Minimum depth foundation
The minimum depth of foundation as per IS 1080-1982 code 50cm from Ground Level.
Depth of foundation formula:-
As per Rankine’s theory & formula
The minimum depth of foundation is represented by the formula
= p/w (1-sin Φ /1+sin Φ) 2,
where p=gross bearing capacity,
w =density of soil,
Φ =angle of response of soil.
But in practice, the foundation depth is kept at 0.90m
EXAMPLE FOR FOUNDATION DEPTH CALCULATION
Let us take
Gross bearing capacity of soil = 451 kN/m2
The density of Soil = 16 kN/m3
The angle of repose = 35 Degrees
Minimum depth = p/w (1-sin Φ /1+sin Φ) 2
=451/16 (1-sin 35/1+sin35)2
=2.10m
