PAINTS
Paints:
- The paints are coatings of fluid materials and they are applied over the surfaces of timber and metals.
- Paint as usually defined as a dispersion of pigments in a drying oil, with addition of driers and thinners, the former to accelerate film formation and hardening, the latter to allow ease and uniformity in brushing and spraying.
Basic constituents of paints:
A base:
The base is a principal constituent of a paint and possesses the building properties.
The commonly used bases are white lead, zinc white, red lead, iron oxide.
A vehicle or carrier:
A vehicle is a liquid substance which keeps the ingredients of a paint in liquid suspension.
Pigment:
A coloring pigment or stainer is a finely divided solid material which provides required shade and colour to the paint
Thinner:
A thinner, solvent or diluent is a volatile substance that is added to the paint to make its application easy and smooth.
Drier:
A drier is a substance which acts as catalyst and quickens the drying of the vehicle used in the paint.
Inert filler:
It is an adulterant usually mixed in an oil paint to modify its weight, to improves its durability, to effect economy in the cost of base used.
Antiskinning agent:
This is used to prevent gelling and skinning of the paint.
Plasticizer:
- It is used to give elasticity to the film and they minimize or prevent cracking.
- Characteristics of good paint:
- It should be able to resist the atmospheric conditions
- It should have high hiding power and the required colour.
- It should dry fairly quickly
- It should resist corrosion when applied on a metal.
- It should not crack on drying
- Paint should have necessary consistency for a particular purpose
