how many cement bags are required for 1000 sq ft slab?
1. Introduction
Cement is one of the important ingredients of concrete, generally, it is mixed in concrete due to adhesive and binding nature with fine & coarse aggregate. A small amount of lime is also added to the concrete mix to increase the workability & to increase the strength of the concrete.
There are different grades of concrete such as M20, M25, M30 etc used for RCC flat roof slab casting.
In this article, we used the nominal mix( which is commonly used in all buildings) ratio of 1:2:3 (M20) (1 part cement is mixed with 2 part sand and 3 part aggregate) which has a compressive strength of 20MPA
Generally, roof slab thickness is kept at about 5 inches thickness.
How many cement bags are required for 1000 sqft roof slab?
Roof slab casting is the process of laying and putting the concrete mix in a horizontal direction & structure over brickwork. The cast of roof slab reinforcement main bar & cross bar is distributed over shuttering areas of roof slab & then we put a concrete mix of M20.
Generally, one bag of Portland cement is a weight of around 50 kg ( 1.25cft) & their density is 1440 kg/m3.
Calculate how many cement bags required for 1000 sq ft roof slab at 5 inch thick
● Given details:-
1) thickness of roof slab = 6″
2) mix ratios = 1:2:3
3) Area of roof slab = 1000 sq ft
4) Density of cement =1440kg/m3
5) one bag cement weight = 50 kg
● Calculation of wet volume of concrete:-
We can determine the quantity of concrete by calculating its volume by multiplying the square footage of the roof slab by its thickness such as –
1) thickness in feet = 5/ 12 = .42 feet,
2) wet volume of concrete = 1000 sq ft × 0.42 feet = 420 cft
● Dry volume:-
wet volume has voids & pores which are filled with water and bubbles it can be removed by vibrator or compressor machine so more quantity of material is required that is dry volume.
Volume of dry concrete is increased by 54%, so we can multiply 1.54 in wet volume to calculate dry volume.
Dry volume of concrete = 420 cubic feet × 1.54 = 647 cubic feet.
● Mix ratio:-
1:2:3 mix ratio (1 part cement is mixed with 2 part sand and 3 part aggregate) is used for preparing concrete mix. Add this mix ratio 1+2+3 = 6, part of cement in mix = 1/6.
● Calculate cement for 500 sq ft roof slab:-
1) cement quantity in cubic feet =1/6 × dry volume of concrete,647 ÷6= 107.83 cubic feet approx
2) cement quantity in cubic meters =1/6 × dry volume of concrete ÷ 35.32, (647 ÷6) ÷ 35.32 = 3.05 cubic meters approx
3) cement quantity in kg = cement quantity in m3 × 1440 kg/m3 = 3.05 × 1440 = 4392 kg approx
4) cement quantity in No. of bags = cement quantity in kg ÷ 50 kg = 4392 ÷ 50 = 88 bags approx.
Conclusions:-
For a 1000 sq ft RCC roof slab casting at 5 inches thick, generally you will need 88 bags of cement
